James McCarthy

Founder

James McCarthy (BSocSci, LLB, LLM) is a proud “Old Grey” boy who studied both his undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Social Science as well as a Bachelor of Laws at Rhodes University between 2008 and 2012.

He then went on to attain his Masters Degree in Intellectual Property Law and Dispute Resolution from the University of Cape Town before completing his articles at a reputable law firm in Cape Town in 2017, NWS.

James was then admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. He consulted and worked in-house in Johannesburg before founding McCarthy Legal in 2021.

James’ passions lie in the fields of Intellectual Property and Privacy law but he has always found value in the practice and understanding of commercial disputes.

Daniel Czepl

Of Counsel

Daniel Czepl (BSocSci Hons, Economics, LLB, LLM Hons) is a dual-qualified lawyer (South Africa and England & Wales) with extensive experience advising on corporate and commercial transactions, venture growth, and capital raising. He has acted for businesses across the agri-commodities, biotech, and technology sectors, in emerging and developed markets.

Daniel completed articles at a leading international law firm before joining a venture-funded edu-tech start-up, leading the execution of Series B and C investment rounds. He later held senior corporate and transactional roles with the African subsidiary of an international mining conglomerate, one of Southern Africa’s largest agri-commodity suppliers, before moving to Europe to work with a Nasdaq-listed biotech in Dublin.

His work focuses on corporate and venture advisory, growth consulting, corporate finance, and early-stage funding, supporting founders and established businesses to structure, fund, and scale.
